Leadership Matters

Leadership Matters is a transformational program that develops image, influence and power among women leaders, by delivering knowledge with mentoring support. In building upon these strengths, program graduates will grow their companies, improve their organizations and better their communities.

This program focuses on accountability, mentoring and personal development skills for women business owners and key management members from women-owned businesses, local corporations and not-for-profit organizations. Nominees are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Desire to grow leadership skills
  • Potential to effect change in your organization and the community
  • Demonstrated leadership in community or professional activities

About the Program

Leadership Matters is an instructional program jointly presented by the Davis College of Business at Jacksonville University (DCOB) and the Jacksonville Women’s Business Center (JWBC). Participants attend seven workshops facilitated by DCOB faculty and are assigned a mentor to assist with specific developmental needs. The program participants prepare a Leadership (IDP, capstone project) and receive a certificate upon completion.

Program Content

Associate Professor of Management, Matrecia S. L. James, Ph.D., is the lead curriculum developer for DCOB. Workshops include mentoring, ethical leadership, analytical skills, upward communication, active listening, influence and image, and fundamentals of human resources. Participants are also invited to attend a weekly speaker series held each Thursday at the DCOB. Speakers are local entrepreneurs who have grown their businesses to significant size. A suggested reading list is provided during the program to supplement the workshop content.

Workshops & Events

Workshops are presented in a specific sequence, with two workshops held each month. The program includes an orientation session, participant’s presentation of their LEP (Leadership Enhancement Plan) and a graduation program separate from the workshops.  One workshop will be a panel discussion with community leaders. Program participants are required to attend at least five workshops to graduate; the first workshop is mandatory. The workshops and orientation are located at the Jacksonville University, Davis College of Business.  The graduation event will be held at the JAX Chamber in conjunction with graduates of other JWBC or the JAX Chamber’s Entrepreneurial Growth Division mentoring and training programs;  specific dates will be announced at the orientation.

Mentor Selection

Participants are assigned a mentor who is selected by JWBC staff based on information she provides in the application. Potential mentors may be SCORE counselors, community leaders, and former mentors from JWBC’s business mentoring programs. Only experienced mentors will be selected for this program. Participants work with the mentors outside of the workshop setting to discuss the content of the workshops and work on specific areas for improvement as decided upon by the participant and mentor. The mentor also assists with preparation of the participant’s Personal Development Plan. Mentors are required to attend the orientation and first workshop, Effective Mentoring, with the participants. Mentors are expected to commit to four to six hours of mentoring.
